Association of thyroid disorder with glycemic variability: a case control study

Abstract

Objective: To examine the association of glycemic indices with thyroid profile in patients of Type 2 diabetes (T2DM).
Methodology: This case control study was conducted at National Medical Center Hospital, Karachi from November 2022 to April 2023. A total of 144 participants were selected, 72 T2DM, underwent thyroid profile test, FBG, RBG and HbA1c. We had 72 non-diabetic subjects as control. Data were collected with convenient sampling technique and analyzed by SPSS version 23.
Results: TSH level was 4.3±2.9 and HbA1c 8.0±1.6 in cases. A strong positive correlation between TSH and HbA1c and negative correlation between FT4 and HbA1c was found.
Conclusion: Study showed a positive effect in glycemic regulation. Good glycemic index control and proper management can help in the reduction of thyroid disorder risk.
