To enrich the pharmacopeia of Ayurveda, inclusion of extra-pharmacopeial drugs in
ayurvedic science is need of the hour. In Saurashtra Alysicarpus longifolius W. & A. Prodr;
regionally known by substitute for Uraria picta i.e.Prishniparni in Ayurvedic classics. The plant
generally grown as weed in the field. It is a novel attempt to report this plant. Root of plant has
not found to be reported and hence attempt is made report this plant. The Roots of this plant
was investigated thoroughly as per the pharmacopoeial parameters. Physicochemical parameters
shows high value of acid insoluble ash indicating high polarity, preliminary phytochemical
investigations shows the presence of alkaloid, tannin, flavonoids mucilage and calcium salts. The
microscopic characters of root shows Mucilage, rosette and acicular crystals of calcium oxalate,
starch grains, tannin Stealar region shows fibers, scalariform vessels and pitted parenchyma and
multiseriate medullary rays.
