THE ROLE OF VITAMIN C IN AMELIORATING PARAQUAT EFFECTS ON LUNG HISTOLOGY, CHROMOSOMES AND BRAIN AND LIVER ENZYMES OF MICE

Abstract

The role of vitamin C in ameliorating paraquat effects on the chromosomes, brain and liver enzymes and lung histological structure in mice were studied. Ten animals, in the third group, were considered as control group of mice and exposed under similar conditions with application of saline solution. The histopatho-logical examination of mice lungs administ-rated orally with paraquat revealed severe degree of bronchopneumonia with numerous foci of granulomatous reactions. The lungs of mice treated with paraquat and vitamin C showed little amounts of edematous fluid in alveoli associated with areas of slightly dilated, emphysematous alveoli and mild lymphocyte infiltration. Administration of paraquat for 4 weeks increased the percentage of chromo-somal aberrations if compared with the non-treated control. The mitotic activity in treated mice was significantly increased. In the group of animals treated with paraquat and vitamin C showed significant reduction in the percentage of chromosomal aberrations. Treatment of mice with paraquat and vitamin C reduced the specific activity of AChE but the inhibitory effect for paraquat alone was more pronounced than paraquat and vitamin C. Vitamin C decreased this activity. It was also observed that paraquat alone increased cytochrome P450 activity and decreased the activity of GST while paraquat with vitamin C elevated GST activity, but reduced cytochrome P450 activities.
