The histolgical and ultrastructural alterations induced in the antennal gland of freshwater crayfish Procambarus clarkii exposed to 1/10 LC50 of pyriproxyfen for 15 and 30 days were examined. The antennal gland is normally consisted of coelomosac, labyrinth and bladder.
Exposure to pyriproxyfen led to histopathological changes which were clearly visible in the epithelial cells of labyrinth. The lesions were characterized by a loss of microvilli, moderate nuclear hypertrophy, a dilation of nuclear envelop, apparent cell sloughing and intensive secretory activity. Mitochondria were irregularly shaped and less abundant. The amount of smooth endoplasmic reticulum had increased and often displayed a striking degree of organization into extensive elongate parallel aggregates of tubular elements. Alterations in the antennal gland coelomosac (podocytes) included pyknosis, haemocyte infilteration. Many vesicles were observed filled with electron-dense material located in the cytoplasm of coelomosac. Moreover, the presence of dark granules within podoyctes of antennal gland was discussed.
