A Study on Socioeconomic Status and Obesity in a Group of Adolescents

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of socioeconomic status (SES) on obesity in a group of adolescents.
METHODS: This study was performed Ankara with students of two schools with low SES (n:183) and high SES (n:187) according to data Prime Minister Republic of Turkey, Turkish Statistical Instıtute. The total of 370 adolescents, 11-13 years-old, joined to the study which was 186 boys and 184 girls. The anthropometric measurements and the prevalence of obesity were done on adolescents. Moreover, their nutritional statuses were assessed; daily energy and nutrient intakes were calculated. The data were evaluated as low and high SES.
