Abstract
The examination of the kidneys and lungs of N-Methyl-N-Nitrosuria (MNU)-treated rats showed numerous histopathological changes. Sixty animals were divided into four groups 15 rats each. The control group; rats fed on a standard diet, and the second group (Spirulina-treated), rats fed on a standard diet mixed with 1% Spirulina powder. The third group (MNU-treated group), rats fed on a standard diet and injected i.p. with a single dose of 45 mg/kg body weight MNU. The fourth group (MNU and Spirulina), rats fed on a standard diet mixed with 1% Spirulina powder and intraperitonealy injected with 45 mg/kg MNU as a single dose body weight. In kidneys of MNU-injected group, the cuboidal cells of the convoluted tubules showed disintegration of the nuclear material. The glomeruli were atrophied and Bowman's spaces were increased in most corpuscles. A remarkable abundance of leukocytic infiltration was also observed. However, the lungs of MNU-treated rats showed thickened intra-alveolar septa and congested blood capillaries. Necrotic cells with increased collagen fibres surrounding the damaged bronchioles were also noted. On the other hand, kidneys and lungs of rats treated with MNU and Spirulina platenesis showed almost normal histological structure.
