COMARATIVE STUDY ON THE EFFECTS AND APPLICATIONS OF SOME ANAESTHETIC AGENTS USING SOME STRESS PARAMETERS IN CULTURED OREOCHROMIS NILOTICUS

Abstract

This work was designed to determine the effects and concentrations of three water-born anaesthetic agents {Tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222), Clove oil (Euganol) and Chloral hydrate}in addition to one systemic anaesthetic agent (Ketamine) in cultured Oreochromis niloticus. The induction time and recovery time of each anaesthetic agent were recorded. The effects of these anaesthetic agents on some haematological parameters, serum creatinine and serum total protein and plasma cortisol were estimated. Behavioural changes during different stages of anaesthesia were also recorded. The validity of these anaesthetic agents for fish specialists was verified through measurement of stress parameters namely serum glucose and plasma cortisol. This was investigated after transportation of fish from the farm to the laboratory under the sedative effects of the aforementioned anaesthetic agents. Results revealed that with all the used agents there were leucopenia, hypercortisolaemia and total hypoproteinaemia associated with anaethesia. Otherwise, these anaesthetic agents had no significant effect on haemoglobin concentration, red blood cells count and serum creatinine. There were hypoglycaemia and hypocortisolaemia in the serum and plasma collected from fish transported under the sedative effects of water-born anaesthetic agents when compared with transported control group. Clove oil (Euganol) was found to be the best as a safe, cheap, less stressful, and can be applied as a sedative and anaesthetic agent in Oreochromis niloticus.
