COMPARATIVE LIGHT AND ULTRASTRUCTURAL STUDIES OF SKIN IN STENODACTYLUS PETRII AND PTYODACTYLUS GUTTATUS (REPTILIA: GEKKONIDAE)

Samah T. Darwish.

Abstract

Stenodactylus petrii and Ptyodactylus guttatus geckos are belong to the subfamily Gekkonidae. Both species varied markedly in scale characteristic structures and arrangement of epidermal sense organs which are abundant in the dorsal head region more than the ventral ones. Also, the epidermal sense organs are of large size in the ventral head surface in both species and these facilitate the activity of both geckos during day and night cycle. Histologically, the outer oberhautchen of dorsal skin is much more thickened in Ptyodactylus guttatus. Also, the epidermis and whole skin region is more thickened in the dorsal surface than the ventral ones in both species. Stenodactylus petrii showed apparent reduction of epidermal and skin size comparing with Ptyodactylus guttatus.

Key words: Skin, Geckos, ultrastructure, Histology
