Phytoplankton species composition have been investigated at four stations; (Sulaimani Sarchnar spring pool, Sarchnar district (waste water), Chaq-Chaq stream (industrial water) and the confluence of these three stations, were selected within Sulaimani city during a drought year from April to Septumber 2008. A total of 106 taxa of phytoplankton were identified, Bacillarophyceae species were the most abundant group followed by Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae, only 2 species of Euglenophyceae and 1 species of Dinophyceae were recorded. Some genera of phytoplankton were represented by high numbers of the species such as Cyclotella, Cymbella, Nitzschia, Navicula, Gomphonema, Synedra and Achnanthes. The higher phytoplankton density was recorded in the Chaq-Chaq stream (422.2 individual × 103 L-1 followed by Sarchnar spring pool (201.81 Individual × 103 L-1) then (155.67 Individual × 103 L-1 in the confluence of the three stations while the lowest density recorded in the Sarchnar district sewage water (152.29 Individual × 103 L-1) The highest value of total phytoplankton diversity was recorded in Sarchnar district sewage water. Some physical and chemical characters of water were determined in which the range of them were as follows: 21 to 40ºC and 15 to 33ºC for air and water temperature respectively, electrical conductivity were ranged from 272 to 2228 μS.cm-1. Total dissolved solids ranged from 174.08 to 1425.95 mg L-1 0.00 to 540 NTU for turbidity, 1.5 to 8.5 mg L-1 for dissolved oxygen, nutrients (8.6 to 65.5 mg at N-NO3 L-1 0.01 to 0.67 mg at N-NO2 L-1 and 0.9 to 48.1 mg at P-PO4 L-1 recorded for nitrate, nitrite and phosphate, respectively.
