Retrieval of double J catheter using flexible cystoscope

Abstract

Objective: Our aim is to study the efficiency of using flexible cystoscope to retrieve JJ catheter and compare it to rigid cystoscope.
Materials and methods: Between period of January 2007 and December 2008, a total of 600 patients underwent removal JJ catheter using cystoscope in Prince Hussein Urology Center. Flexible cystoscope was used in 230 patients while rigid cystoscope used in 270 patients. All procedures were done under local anesthesia except some cases, which required sedation.
Results: A total of 576 patients completed the procedure, 220 patients used flexible cystoscope and 316 patients used rigid cystoscope, 24 patients require general anesthesia and more invasive procedure to remove the JJ catheter.
Conclusion: Flexible cystoscope is safe, more comfortable and more convenient to patients in comparison to rigid cystoscope.
