Background: Varicose ulcer is a complication of varicose veins or deep vein thrombosis resulting in the formation of an often large, non-healing, tender, recurrent ulcer, leading to scarring, haemorrhage, infections, disability etc. The treatment involves dressing with EUSOL, antibiotics and surgical procedures like split skin graft etc. Surgical procedures do not many times produce complete healing of the wound.
Objectives: The following work was done to evaluate the role of Jalukavacharana (leech therapy) as an effective alternate to surgery for the complete healing of varicose ulcers.
Materials and Methods: The ulcer was washed with Gomutra Arka (Distillate of Cows urine) for the debridement of slough and then Jalukavacharana was done for acceleration of oxygen and nutrient perfusion to the wound site for early healing of the ulcer.
Observations and results: By the above treatment methods, the non-healing ulcer got completely debrided and healed.
Conclusion: Jalukavacharana was successful in the promotion of early healing of varicose ulcer thus avoiding the necessity of skin graft or any other surgical procedures for the complete healing of the wound.
