A Dream Analysis: The Rationale and Framing of Xi Jinping’s China Dream Rhetoric
John Yu Zhang.
Abstract
This paper argues that the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), under Xi Jinping’s leadership, is using the China Dream campaign to renew Chinese people’s hope and confidence in the Party amid the widespread corruption, inequality and injustice in the Chinese society. The paper investigates the rationales behind the campaign: the Party’s legitimacy is at stake, and easing the international anxiety about China’s intention. The paper analyzes the framing of the Dream rhetoric as a historical dream, an ideological signature, and the “only the CCP can and will” belief.
Key words: China Dream, ideology, framing, political legitimacy, rhetoric
