Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal motility disorder with less understood patho-physiology. The disease moiety is characterized by altered bowel habits and abdominal pain in the absence of any detectable structural abnormality. Though, a change in the bowel habits is the characteristic feature of IBS , it seem that IBS is predominantly a disease of the colon. But, presence of upper gastro intestinal complaints like dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting suggests that other areas of the gut apart from colon may also be involved in its pathogenesis. Ayurveda, considers that irritable bowel syndrome is not a single disease but a group of gastrointestinal disorders of different aetiologies and thus can be correlated with some diseases of gastrointestinal tract of vatic origin, involving both annnavaha srotas(upper gastrointestinal tract) and purishavaha srotas(lower gastrointestinal tract)i.e. vatatisara, vatic grahni, pakwashaya gatavata and udavarta. These clinical entities are having similarities with subtype of IBS. This review is an insight of ayurvedic aspect of irritable bowel syndrome.
