Prevalence of depression among basic years medical students in Qassim University and Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University

Abstract

Background: Depression is one of the most prevalent psychiatric diseases, manifesting through a variety of mental and physical symptoms such as restless sleep, loss of interest, low mood, exhaustion, and attention issues. This study aims to determine the prevalence of depression among medical students at Qassim University (QU) and Imam Abdulrahman University (IAU).

Methods: An online survey was used to assess the prevalence of depression among 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year medical students at QU and IAU in Saudi Arabia. The survey included the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a validated tool for measuring depression severity.

Results: This study investigated depression risk factors among medical students in Saudi Arabia. In QU, a higher GPA (≥4) was associated with a significantly lower likelihood of depression (84.2% less likely). In IAU, while no factors were significant at the stricter p
