Medical oncology perception among medical students and interns in Saudi Arabia

Abstract

Objective: This study assessed Saudi medical students’ and interns’ perceptions, and medical education related to oncology, in addition to providing suggestions to enhance these areas from students’ and interns’ perspectives. Furthermore, to determine which factors influence the quality of their education and their interest in being future medical oncologists.
Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out among medical students and interns in Saudi Arabia in August 2022. Using Google documents, an electronically distributed, self-administered questionnaire was designed to assess students’ and interns’ medical oncology education, interest, and perception.
Results: Approximately 422 eligible responses were obtained from medical students and interns across Saudi Arabia. Participants who have received medical oncology education theoretically alone or without the involvement of an oncologist evaluated their education as poorer than the ones who received it clinically or with the involvement of an oncologist (p-values = 0.002,
