ERAS: anesthetist’s perspective!

Ayesha Fatima, Tassadaq Khurshid.

Abstract

Many of you have undergone a surgery at any point of life, and wanted enhanced recovery after surgery? The term “Enhanced Recovery after Surgery” (ERAS) is progressively emerging for the last two decades. First described by a Scandinavian surgeon, Henrik Kehlet, when he described the effects of multimodal pain management, measures to decrease perioperative stress response and use of minimal invasive surgical techniques, to decrease the postoperative hospitalization and increase patient satisfaction.1 Initially developed for patients undergoing colorectal and cardiac surgery, enhanced recovery protocols have been established for patients undergoing esophageal, bariatric, pancreatic and abdominal surgery.

Key words: ERAS, anesthesia, enhanced recovery.
