Objective: The aim of this study is assessment of sexual dysfunction in female patients with major depressive disorder and panic disorder and compare the two groups.
Methods: Total 76 female patients with primary diagnosis of major depressive disorder ( 46 patients) and panic disorder ( 30 patients) according to DSM-IV, who is sexually active and not use psychotropic medication were inclued. Sociodemographic data aqcusition form and the Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX) were administered to all patients. The study was carried out retrospectively by analyzed patient files.
Results: According to the suggested criteria to identify any sexual dysfunction in the original form of Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale, sexual dysfunction is determined to be more frequent in major depressive disorder group than panic disorder group. Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale sub-item score assessing sexual desire and Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale total score is significantly higher in major depressive disorder patients than panic disorder patients.
Conclusion: Sexual dysfunction is frequent both in major depressive disorder patients and panic disorder patients. In female major depressive disorder patients any of sexual function and sexual dysfunction can be said to be more affected than in panic disorder patients. In depressive patients, especially sexual desire, is disrupted more significantly than patients with panic disorder.
