Awareness of foot care among diabetic patients

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the serious public health problems and its prevelance is increasing globally. The long-term DM and uncontrolled DM result in several complications, including diabetic foot (DF). DF involves the destruction of foot tissue which may lead to amputation; however, proper foot care can prevent the occurrence of DF, as well as its complications. The aim of the current study was to assess the knowledge of diabetic patients about foot care.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in during the period from December 2017 to March 2018 on diabetic patients of both types (type 1 and type 2) of DM at King Salman Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study was performed using a survey to investigate both demographics and knowledge of patients.
