Objective: To compare the frequency of post-operative complications after functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) with and without intranasal splint.
Methodology: This randomized control trial included 114 patients of both genders aged between 15-60 years undergoing FESS via non- probability sampling technique. Patients were randomly allocated into two treatment groups using lottery method. Patients in groups-A received splint while those in group-B did not receive. Outcome variable was frequency of post-operative adhesions, pain severity, discomfort, headache, infection, bleeding, and eye symptoms, which was noted and compared between the groups using chi-square test. SPSS-26 was used for data analysis.
Results: Significant difference was observed between Group-A and Group B in terms of post operative severity of pain, occurrence of adhesions, persistent defect and eye symptoms. However, no significant difference was observed in terms of occurrence of infection, bleeding, headache and discomfort.
Conclusion: Use of splints following FESS reduces post-operative adhesions and other problems like pain severity, headache, bleeding and infection.
