Abstract

Refractory and super-refractory status epilepticus (SRSE) is a life-threatening neurological emergency, associated with very high morbidity and mortality. Treatment should be aimed to stop seizure and to avoid cerebral damage& morbidity related to it. The term SRSE is reserved for the patients who continue to have seizures despite using general anaesthetic agents, or for whom seizures reoccur when therapy is tapered or withdrawn. There are many therapeutic options for SRSE like antiepileptic drug therapy, general anaesthesia, hypothermia, ketogenic diet and other medical, immunological& physical therapies have been tried. We report a case of SRSE, which might be controlled by dexmedetomidine infusion.

Key words: Anti-epileptic drug, Dexmedetomidine, Status epilepticus, Super refractory status epilepticus
