Objective: To observe the effects of metformin and vanadyl sulfate on fasting blood sugar in streptozotocin and nicotinamide induced diabetic rats.
Methodology: Twenty-one days of experimental study was carried out in 60 adult male Wistar Albino rats weighing between 170 to 220 gm. Five groups were made with twelve rats in each group. Group A (control) with no intervention. Forty-eight rats (Group B, C, D and E) were made diabetic by intraperitoneal induction of streptozotocin 60 mg/kg and nicotinamide 120 mg/kg. Group B received metformin 200 mg/kg. Group C was treated with vanadyl sulfate 5 mg/kg and group D received metformin 200 mg/kg and vanadyl sulfate 5 mg/kg. Group E was left untreated. Animals were sacrificed on day 22 and fasting blood sugar levels were measured.
