Awareness, behavior, and attitude regarding prostate cancer screening and its treatment in Al Ahsa, Saudi Arabia

Abstract

Background: In Saudi Arabia, prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common cancers in men, recently, the cases of PCa have been increasing, and the community has high-risk factors. However, the awareness and the demand for the screening test of PCa is low. This study aimed at assessing the awareness, behavior, and attitude regarding PCa among males in Saudi Arabia who were older than 20 years.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Saudi Arabia using a self-administered questionnaire for males (Saudi citizens) older than 20 years. Data were collected via social media from June 2022 to August 2022 and received 751 responses. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 22 was used to extract, review, code and analyze the data.
Result: A total of 751 participants completed the survey, and 619 met the inclusion criteria. The majority of them were aged between 20 and 29 years (50.3%), and only 7.9% had a family history of PCa. The majority of participants, 88.9%, did not know about the screening for PCa, while 19.1% knew about it. Further, 67% intend to do prostate screening in the future.
Conclusion: The study found a high awareness level regarding PCa in the Al Ahsa population among which the older individuals had higher knowledge levels than the younger participant.
