A Study on the Development of a Middle School Students’ Attitudes towards Mathematics Scale

Nezih ÖNAL.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a “Likert-type scale” for middle school students’ attitudes toward mathematics. Data were collected from 6th, 7th and 8th grade students (n=311) attending two private tutoring institutions in Cankaya, Ankara by using convenience sampling method. As a result of the analysis, it has been determined that this scale has 4 sub-compositions. As a result of factor analysis, the number of items has become 22 and in order to determine the coherence of this scale Cronbach Alpha coefficient has been calculated as 0.90. At the end of the confirmatory factor analysis, cohesion indices were calculated as GFI=0,91, AGFI=0,88, NFI=0,96, NNFI=0,98, CFI=0,98, RMSEA=0.050. According to the results of this study, middle school students’ attitudes toward mathematic can be identified.

Key words: Attitude, Mathematic Attitude Scale, Validity, Reliability
