Teachers Views about Retirement and Pre-retirement Training*

Abstract
he aim of this study was to find out teachers‟ views about retirement, their needs in the postretirement period, their readiness levels for retirement and to identify their opinions about pre-retirement
training programme. Twenty-two teachers near retirement or deserved-retirement-but-not-retired participated in
this study. Data were collected by a semi-structured interview form. In data analysis process, content analysis
method was used. Results showed that some teachers perceived retirement as an opportunity and a new start,
but some others thought of it as an ending in their lives. Most teachers had no plans for retirement. Teachers
who had plans planned to spend more time with their family, start up a business, or take part in social projects.
Economic needs are the most important ones in the post-retirement period. Most teachers liked the idea of preretirement training program and were willing to participate.
