Meanings Ascribed to the Concept of “Culture” by Prospective Turkish-Language Teachers and Their Attitude towards Popular Culture

Abstract

Transmitting our national culture to the following generations and securing the uniformity among the people by means of a shared culture are among the essential tasks of the national education. The greatest responsibility while performing such task will be incurred by Turkish-language teachers and Turkish-language programs and courses. The liveliest, most integrative examples of our culture; those that sustain the national conscience and enhance patriotism have been taught in Turkish classes. In this respect, Turkish-language teachers should be trained well through a suitable program pre-service and in-service. Teachers, who have an important role in transmitting our culture to the future, should be assessed as to which consciousness level they are in the matter of culture. The aim of this study is to reveal the perceptions of prospective Turkish-language teachers regarding “culture” and “popular culture” concepts. The population of the study consisted of prospective Turkish-language teachers attending a Turkish-Language Education Program. This study attempted to identify the meanings ascribed to the concept of “culture” by prospective Turkish-language teachers and their attitude towards popular culture based on the data gathered through open-ended survey. The content analysis from qualitative research techniques was utilized for the analysis of the data. The obtained data were interpreted by directly quoting from the views of the prospective teachers and through presenting them in tables together with their frequencies.
