Evaluation of the Social Studies Programs Implemented from the Establishment of the Turkish Republic in terms of Elements of Educational Program

Abstract

The present study aims to reveal the evolution social studies program has undergone since the establishment of the Republic according to the elements of the educational program. The study is descriptive in nature. In the present study, the social studies programs put into effect in 1924, 1926, 1936, 1948, 1968, 1998 and 2005 were investigated in terms of their objectives, content, learning-teaching process, and evaluation. And this investigation was carried out based on a literature review. At the end of the study, it was found that though the Social Studies Course program was first included in 1968 program, there were History, Geography and Getting to Know our Home Land courses concurring with the content and objectives of the course programs were in effect in 1926, 1936 and 1948. Until the implementation of 1948 social studies program, there were no elements of systematic program development and the educational program was only viewed as a list of the topics to be covered.
