Citizenship and Turkish Citizenship in Views of Pre-Service Social Studies Teachers

Abstract

This research aims to exploring how the undergraduate students who are also social studies teacher candidates conceptualize and perceive citizenship and Turkish citizenship concepts because the important role of the social studies in citizenship education. It is a descriptive study which is designed in qualitative research paradigm. Participant of the study are consisted of 129 second grader pre-service social studies teachers who are enrolled to a state university in Turkey. An open -ended data collection tool was developed and used to determine what citizenship and Turkish citizenship meant to pre-service social studies teachers. In conclusion, it was seen that the pre-service social studies teachers perceived citizenship in the context of missions and responsibilities rather than rights and freedoms.
