Children’s Right to Acquire Information and Be Protected from Injurious Publications in Textbooks

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to put forth to what extent the issues of the children’s right to
acquire information through mass media and their right to be protected from injurious publications have been
given place in elementary school 1st
, 2nd and 3rd grade Life Sciences (LS) textbooks and 4th and 5th grade Social
Sciences (SS) textbooks that are published and distributed to schools by the Ministry of National Education in the
2006-2007 educational year in Turkey. In the study, qualitative research method was preferred and all the themes
of textbooks were studied by use of the content analysis method. Frequencies and percentages were used in the
analysis of data. In all the textbooks, the topic of the child’s right to acquire information through mass media were
given more place than the topic of the child’s right to be protected from injurious publications.
