How should a physical education and sport teacher be? -The opinions of primary school students

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to reveal general characteristics and professional qualities of physical education and sport teachers according to the opinions of primary school students. The study was conducted with the participation of 408 students randomly chosen from those who study at 6th, 7th, and 8th grades of three primary schools in Osmangazi, Bursa. The students were asked to answer one open-ended question and content analysis method was used to analyze the data. The data obtained from the analysis were classified into two categories as “general characteristics of a physical education and sport teacher” and “professional qualities of physical education and sport teacher”. As a result, it is seen that the qualities of physical education and sport teachers are: being tall in terms of appearance, being a tolerable person in terms of character, treating the students well, considering students’ desire, having much sport knowledge, being a person who understands students in terms of professional competency and being justly among the students.
