Mathematics teachers views on the application of expository teaching approach in mathematics instruction

Abstract
Twenty-five mathematics teachers from 14 middle schools in Ankara were selected by stratified
random sampling method to participate in this study in the second semester of 2003-2004 academic year. The
aim of this study was observe and determine the methods/approaches that mathematics teachers apply in their
classes and their views on the application of expository teaching approach in mathematics instruction. Data were
collected through interviews with teachers; class observations, and lesson plans obtained from teachers. It was
concluded that most of the participated teachers applied traditional teaching methods both in their lesson plans
and classes. Moreover, it was revealed that most of the participants find expository teaching approach close to
their way of teaching and try to apply this approach in their lessons.
