Teachers’ preferences in methods of reading-writing instruction

Abstract

Reading and writing are important skills of contemporary human lives. Therefore, how to instruct the skills becomes very important. In our country, there are different methods in instruction of reading. To search reading-writing instruction methods (preferences) of teachers who had thought first grade was the main aim in this study. Besides the main aim, to understand the teachers’ view related with reasons of their preferences of sentence method, disadvantages of the method and alternative ways for usage of the method were other sub aims of the study. The teachers group who had thought first grade at least once was chosen randomly from primary schools of Istanbul City. 91 % of the teachers mentioned that they preferred to use sentence method in instruction of reading, but only 67 % of them mentioned that the method has no disadvantages. The teacher views related with disadvantages of the method, reasons of its preference and how it should be applied is also covered in the article.
