Anadili öğretiminin en temel amacı öğrencilerin anlama ve anlatma becerilerini geliştirmeye çalışmaktır. Belirtilen amaca ulaşabilmek için ise dinleme, konuşma, okuma ve yazma gibi dört ana beceriden yararlanılır. Türkçe öğretiminde dört temel dil becerisinin geliştirilmeye çalışılması, dil öğretiminin öteki derslerden farklılığını ortaya koymaktadır. Dil öğretimi bir bilgi dersi olmaktan çok, bir beceri kazandırma dersi olarak düşünülmelidir. O nedenle, öğrenme-öğretme sürecinde öğrencilerin etkin katılımının sağlanması ve uygulamaya yönelik etkinliklerin kullanılması son derece önemlidir.
