The Application of Discovery Learning and Meaningful Learning Approaches in Mathematics Classes: Two Lesson Plans on “The Square of Addition of Two Terms”

Abstract

Many researchers and educators have been developing different learning approaches and trying to describe how learning occurs. In order to apply these learning models in real-life, teaching environments and methods based on these learning approaches have been developed. In this paper, two learning approaches, which have been seen as suitable and applicable in mathematics education, “Discovery Learning” and “Meaningful Learning” ,approaches, are described and compared. Afterwards, two lesson plans on “the square of addition of two terms” are presented as examples of how these learning approaches could be applied in mathematics classes.
