THE PERSONAL HYGIENE HABITS OF THE PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN TWO DIFFRENT LIVING AREA OF TRABZON

Abstract

Objective: Personal hygiene plays an important role in the control of the many infection diseases. The aim of the this study was to investigate hygiene attitudes of students who have had education at 5th and 8th classes in two different primary schools in the rural and urban areas.
Method: The study was performed between October 15 and November 10 in 2001. Students were given questionnaire form including questions about hand-washing, tooth-brushing, foot-cleaning and whole body hygiene attitudes. To determine the personal hygiene status of the students, hygiene score was created.
Results: Totally 156 students from two schools were surveyed. The frequency of the students living in rural area who have hand-washing habit after getting up and before using toilet was more than the students living in urban area (p=0.026, p=0.000). The frequency of the students living in urban area, cutting fingernail weekly, using toilet paper, and changing underclothes, was more than students in rural area (p=0.001, p=0.002, p=0.019, p=0.006, p=0.002). The factors effecting personal hygiene were examined by stepwise regression analyses. The education level of the mother, structure of the family and toilet in home were found significantly effective on personal hygiene.
Conclusion: The results of show that the education of the mother should be considered to promote the personal hygiene habits.
