Abstract
There is no consensus on the indications, monitorization of the cerebral perfusion and protective interventions for the brain damage during carotid endarterectomy yet. Hereby we present 34 carotid endarterectomies performed in our clinic. No monitoring technique for cerebral perfusion or shunting was used in this series. There is no mortality. Both of the postoperative neurologic complications observed were temporary. We conclude that monitorisation or shunting for cerebral ischmia is inappropriate. Barbiturate anesthesia, controlled hypertension, systemic heparinisation and 02 inhalation during carotid artery endarterectomy is pertinent for prevention of brain damage
