Rafay Ahmed Siddiqui, Mehreen Fatima, Ramlah Naz.

Abstract

Objective: To estimate the age by analyzing at the fusion of xiphoid process and manubrium with the sternum.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was carried out at the Department of Radiology, Fatima Hospital, Baqai Medical University, Karachi, Pakistan. A total of 180 subjects were enrolled by simple randomized sampling technique. They were divided into nine age groups as 25-30, 30-35, 35-40, 40-45, 45-50, 50-55, 55-60, 60-65 and 65-70 years. Radiographs of sternum lateral & AP view were taken. Data were analyzed using SPSS 21.
Results: It was observed that xiphoid process and manubrium fusion with the sternal body start in patients having age above 30 years while complete fusion occurs in all (100%) patients in age group of 60-65 years and 65-70 years in patients of both the gender (p˂0.05).
Conclusion: Age can be estimated by the radiographic evaluation of xiphoid process and manubrium fusion with the sternal body. The xiphoid process and manubrium fusion with the sternal body begins after the age of 30 years while complete fusion occurs after the age of 60 years.

Key words: Manubrium, xiphoid process, sternal body, age estimation.
