Importance of Hypocholesterolemia among Lipid Disorders in Children

Abstract

Lipids are important substances for inflammation and immune functions of the organism, and also important for neutralization of endoxins and liposaccharides. Therefore, cholesterol is an essential element of nutrition in clinically critical patients. Lipoproteins, which are of vital importance for human organism, may be low because of genetic or acquired reasons. Hypolipidemia that is characterized by decrease of plasma lipids is, unlike hyperlipidemia, a condition which is recognized late. Hypolipidemia is commonly seen during the course of severe diseases. Furthermore, total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) may also decrease during infectious diseases, in malignancies, burns, hematologic disorders, and in traumatic patients.
