Objective: To determine the mediating role of sexual satisfaction in predicting marital satisfaction from marital commitment in patients of chronic diseases.
Methodology: Two hundred patients of chronic diseases (diabetes, asthma, mental illness, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, renal failure, neurological disease, and hepatitis) were recruited from the outpatient departments of two public hospitals Bahawalpur from october 2019 to January 2020. Marital Commitment Scale, Index of Sexual Satisfaction and ENRICH Marital Satisfaction Scale were administered after obtaining the written informed consent from patients.
Results: Sexual satisfaction significantly mediates the relationship between marital commitment and marital satisfaction in patients of chronic diseases. The males were more likely to show more marital commitment. The chronic diseases and its severity significantly lowered sexual satisfaction in them. The duration of marriage significantly determined marital commitment.
Conclusion: The type and severity of chronic disease significantly lowered sexual satisfaction. Hence, chronic disease, severity, gender and duration of marriage all contribute to lowered marital satisfaction through lowered marital commitment and sexual satisfaction.
