Recently, much research attention has been focused towards nickel-based catalysts for hydrodeoxygenation reactions due to their low costs, availability, and good catalytic activity. This has led to the accumulation of huge literature pertaining these catalysts, and hence the need for this review. Here, attention is centred towards mono-metallic nickel-based catalysts for hydrodeoxygenation of bio-oil, particularly lignin derived bio-oil. With regards to performance evaluation of these catalysts, emphasis is placed more on the activity and selectivity assessment. Furthermore, reaction conditions such as temperature, pressure and time were also assessed in relation to catalyst performance. This review concludes that mono-metallic nickel-based catalysts are highly effective on acidic supports under mild temperature and high reaction pressure for hydrodeoxygenation of bio-oil to transportation fuel.
