The Telangana movement was praised as a popular democratic fight against the political dictatorship and economic exploitation of several academics. The desire for individuality and self-regulation of people is regarded as formal recognition in the decision by the Central Government to form a new state. This article explores the process of developing an identity of Telangana and illuminates the numerous reasons for this. Telangana's identity is built in part on the realities and in part on false hopes. In addition to academics, the opportunism of political parties, and especially the left's unjustifiable apathy, helped regional identity to reappear.
