Abstract | | | | Objective: To compare the effects of nigella sativa and pioglitazone on hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, adiponectin and resistin in streptozotocin induced diabetic mice.
Methodology: This quasi-experimental study was conducted from June 2021 to May 2022. Thirty mice were obtained. Fifteen were included in each of the two groups. Mice were given high fat diet for 8 weeks followed by low dose of streptozotocin injection intraperitoneally. After confirmation of diabetes, mice were enrolled for further study. Nigella sativa and pioglitazone in doses of 300 mg/kg and 30mg/kg were given by gavage tube once daily for 16 weeks. Blood glucose, adiponectin, resistin, cholesterol and triglycerides levels were observed after 16 weeks in both the groups. Statistical analyses were done by SPSS version 20.
Results: There were statistically significant changes in blood glucose, adiponectin, resistin, cholesterol and triglycerides levels in diabetic mice given pioglitazone as compared to those who received nigella sativa ethanolic extraction (p
