Abstract

Objectives: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound, intravenous urography (IVU) and plain CT KUB in the diagnosis of ureteric stone.
Methodology: This is a cross sectional study of radiological and clinical data of 60 patients with suspected ureteric stone carried out at Khair Pur Mirus Medical College & Hospital and Red Crescent Hospital Sukkur, Pakistan form January 2013 to february 2014. Presence of hydronephrosis, hydroureter and site of ureteric were determined.
Results: The mean age of the 60 patients (36 male and 24 female) was 29.5 years (range 20-60 years). Ultrasound detected hydrnephrosis and hydroureter in 60(100%) patients but stone was detected in 40(66.6%) patients. In IVU hydronephrosis and hydroureter was detected in 50(83.3%) patients but stones were detected in 45(75%) patients. On plain CT KUB, hydronephrosis and hydroureter were detected in 12(80%) patients and stone detected in 15(100%) patients.
Conclusions: Plain CT KUB compared with IVU had a higher detection rate for ureteric stone but used in selected cases due to radiation risk.

Key words: Ureteric stone, ultrasound, X-Ray IVU, plain CT KUB.
