Comparison of BacT/Alert Blood Culture Systems With Conventional Methods for Culturing Normally Sterile Body Fluids Other Than Blood.

Abstract


 

Automated blood culture systems have been used for the detection of bacteremia and fungemia. In this study, we

compared BacT/Alert blood culture system and conventional culture methods for culture of sterile body fluids

other than blood. A total of 91 specimens were tested including pleural, peritoneal, synovial and cerebrospinal

fluids. Of the isolates considered clinicaly significant, 18 (95 %) were recovered by BacT/Alert system while only

11 (58%) were recovered by conventional culture methods.
