The Effect of Instruction Based on Constructivist Approach on 6th Grade Students’ Achievement About Respiration System

Abstract

In this study, the effect of using the constructivist approach in teaching “Respiratory System” on 6th grade students’ achievement was examined. An achievement test was developed and applied as a sampling, pre-test and post-test. The sampling data were collected from a primary school in Balikesir during 2004-2005 academic year. 64 students from two classes were included in this study. After the pre-test, the instruction model was applied to the experimental group but no change was made to the teaching style for the control group. The instruction model consist of concept teaching text, worksheets, respiratory system model and crossword. Data was analyzed by ANOVA. The results showed that constructivist approach effects on the students’ accomplishment and understanding levels of “Respiratory System” topic better than traditional one.
